Laser Therapy

Laser Therapy Pain Treatment in Woodbury, MN

If you’ve tried other methods or looking for something different, our expert chiropractors in Woodbury, MN, can provide laser therapy that quickly reduces pain and inflammation as well as shortens recovery time!

Laser therapy is a treatment that uses focused light to stimulate photobiomodulation (PBM). The laser interacts with the mitochondria, specifically the Cytochrome C system. This interaction triggers a biological cascade of events that leads to an increase in cellular metabolism, which can decrease pain, decrease inflammation as well as accelerate the healing process!

You may have heard of cold laser or low-level laser therapy. These terms have been replaced with photobiomodulation (PBM), as it more appropriately defines the actual process of what is happening.

How Does Laser Therapy Work?

  1. The laser beam stimulates the Cytochrome C complex, which is found in the inner membrane of the cell mitochondria. Cytochrome C is a vital component of the electron transport chain that drives cellular metabolism. For the stimulation to occur, the laser has to be powerful enough to penetrate the skin to get to the deeper layer of tissue. MN Spine and Sport has the most powerful laser on the market, that allows the beam to get to tissue that only a few years ago was not possible!
Do not be fooled!  There are other products that claim to also stimulate PBM.  While the heat generated may feel good, those products cannot penetrate the skin to get to the damaged target tissue!
  2. As light is absorbed by Cytochrome C, it stimulates the electron transport chain to increase the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) within the mitochondria. When tissue is damaged, the production of ATP in the cell is impaired which slows down the metabolism of the cell as a protective mechanism. PBM helps restore the oxidative process which helps restore normal cellular function and speeds healing!
  3. Laser stimulation also produces nitric oxide. It is a powerful vasodilator and an important cellular signaling molecule involved in many physiological processes, including decreasing inflammation!

What does Laser Therapy Feel Like?

You will feel a sense of warmth with each laser treatment, as the laser reaches damaged cells and tissues. Results are typically faster than many other therapeutic modalities. Improvement can often be seen after the first or second treatment however, results will not be overnight.  As with other forms of treatment, results from laser therapy are cumulative; it takes time.  Our Woodbury chiropractors at MN Spine and Sport use the Diowave 60-Watt Laser, the strongest and most effective laser available!
